WHY ROOTS MATTER BEFORE SHOOTS

We spend much of our lives looking upwards and outwards.

Towards achievement and beauty.

Flowers, blossom and autumn leaves catch our attention.

Yet nature quietly reminds us that healthy growth begins somewhere we rarely look. Below the surface. Very few people stop to admire roots, yet this is where stability begins.

If I were to borrow a lesson from nature, I would suggest that the act of noticing enriches the soil in which our roots grow. Tiny moments of noticing nature, the weather, the changing seasons, bird song, the feel of our bare feet on the ground, slowly make our soil richer.

Noticing prepares the soil in which quiet grows.

Through noticing, quiet begins to settle within us. It is in this quieter space that our roots develop and deepen.

Of course, roots do not stop life happening to us. Storms will still come.

But healthy roots give us somewhere steady to return to. They allow us to meet life's challenges from somewhere deeper than the noise around us.

Our roots grow slowly and are almost entirely unseen, nourished by many small moments that, taken on their own, seem almost insignificant. Until one day, something remarkable happens.

A small green shoot pushes through the surface. Not because it has suddenly become courageous but because it has spent time quietly growing the roots it needed first.

Perhaps courage has always begun underground.

Pauses you can feel, drawn from nature.
